Prevent adverse water run off this spring!

Please be aware of potentially adverse effects of drainage at your property this spring.

There are a few simple measures everyone can take to ensure that your property and your neighboring properties are not at risk for poor drainage. Water should be directed away from structures and off the property by means of proper grading as much as possible.  This can be accomplished by providing a gradual slope away from structures, where water can easily flow.  A gradual slope may reduce soil erosion and pooling of water on properties.

All properties are designed and developed to allow for drainage according to a specific drainage plan.  Typically residential properties allow for drainage away from all structures towards side and rear property lines.  Side property lines generally drain towards the front and rear.  Nearly all properties have a drainage and utility easement in these areas that should be kept clear of all structures and obstructions which may alter or obstruct the natural flow of water.

An additional measure, to ensure adequate drainage at properties, is providing downspouts when possible and extensions if needed.  It may also be necessary to create channels in the snow for water to flow through.  These are a cheap and effective way of directing melt water from roof and gutters away from structures.  Please ensure that all downspouts and extensions are directed within your property limits or along drainage easements.  Water shall not be cast directly onto public streets, sidewalks, or neighboring properties.
