What is the explorer program?
The program is open to young men and women ages 14-21 who have completed at least the 8th grade. The program is designed to expose young adults with an interest in a particular career field a firsthand look at the profession, with hands on experience.
What are Police Explorers?
Exploring is part of a “Learning for Life” division of the boy scouts of America.bThe Apple Valley Police Department created its Explorer Post in 1989. The post was designed to expose members to the law enforcement field through training, community service, and ride-alongs. The post is for young adults with a strong interest in law enforcement as a potential career. Participants must be good students and have community respect. Many area police department have Explorer Posts.
What do the Apple Valley Police Explorers do?
The Explorer Post exposes members to the law enforcement field primarily through training. The training consists of lecture and hands-on practical scenarios related to law enforcement topics such as:
- Traffic stops
- Traffic accident investigation
- Bomb threat response
- Domestic crisis
- Arrest and search
- Crime scene investigation
- Crime prevention
- First aid
- Street decisions
- Hostage negotiations
- Burglary response
- Radio use
The explorers also compete in State and National conferences. The State conference is held every year in Rochester Minnesota. The national conference is held every other year around the country.
