[ARCHIVED] Milkweeds for Monarchs

What is the number one thing you can do in Minnesota to support Monarch Butterfly populations? Plant native milkweeds.

What is the number one thing you can do in Minnesota to support Monarch Butterfly populations? Plant native milkweeds. Milkweeds are the only plant that Monarch Caterpillars eat. We have no Monarchs without milkweeds. We recommend planting Marsh Milkweed for wet sites, Butterfly Milkweed for dry sites, and removing seed pods before seeds disperse for the lazy gardener. It is also important to have a variety of high nectar value plants throughout the growing season to provide food for adult butterflies. Native Blazing Star plants are a late season favorite of Monarchs. Visit www.BlueThumb.org to learn where you can buy native plants in Minnesota.
