Dutch Elm Disease (DED) is a non-native fungus that kills native elm trees. During the 20th century, it changed the American streetscape as it spread across America. DED is still prevalent today. Because the fungus is spread by certain elm bark beetles that carry the fungus from infected trees to healthy trees, it is important to avoid pruning elm trees from April through October, to paint pruning wounds immediately if pruning is unavoidable, to tightly cover any elm firewood with bark on it with thick plastic or remove bark from elm firewood, and chip any pruned wood that will not be used. Pruning wounds and elm firewood with bark can attract the elm bark beetles. Infection can occur in as little as 15 minutes after the tree has been pruned.
