Vacant properties in cold weather climates should be adequately protected to prevent freeze damage over winter months.  Freeze damage and lack of proper maintenance at vacant properties can cause thousands of dollars of damage and deterioration to properties but can also reduce property values in general throughout our neighborhoods.

Simple measures can be taken by City Staff to protect vacant properties from major freeze damage, but first we must know about them.  Following proper notice, utility service can be disconnected at the curb, to minimize freeze damage in the event of a water line break within the home.  We are also able to work with property managers, realtors, and even banks when necessary to ensure adequate measures towards winterization are taken within the home.

If you know of a vacant property in your neighborhood Code Enforcement staff would appreciate hearing from you by email at bpierson@ci.apple-valley.mn.us; or by phone at 952.953.2571.
