Backyard pools are a great way to find relief from the summer heat, but they can also pose a safety hazard when access is not properly restricted. Perimeter barriers must be in place and maintained in a sound and safe condition surrounding all pools.
Backyard pools are a great way to find relief from the summer heat, but they can also pose a safety hazard when access is not properly restricted. Perimeter barriers must be in place and maintained in a sound and safe condition surrounding all pools.
In-ground pools and pools less than 48” in height must be surrounded by an approved barrier such as a security fence, freestanding or building wall. The barrier must be a minimum of 48” in height above grade measured on the exterior facing side. Above ground pools greater than 48” in height do not require perimeter barriers as the wall of the pool itself fulfills the barrier requirement. When not in use or left un-attended, however, means of access to above ground pools (i.e. ladders or stairs) must be properly restricted by means of removing, locking, or securing such access points to prevent un-intended access.
If you have a swimming pool or are thinking about installing one at your property, please review and ensure these barrier requirements are met to prevent un-intended access. Building permits are required for installation of all permanent pools (not storable).
If you have any questions regarding these or additional pool requirements, or to report a pool that does not meet the noted barrier requirements in your neighborhood, please contact Ben Pierson with the City of Apple Valley Code Enforcement at 952.953.2571; or by email at bpierson@ci.apple-valley.mn.us.
