The Urban Affairs Advisory Committee has been evaluating the animal control ordinance. The animal ordinance does not currently allow for the keeping of animals other than household pets on residential lots. Due to a lack of clarity of the current ordinance, and an expressed interest by some residents in keeping farm animals such as chickens and goats on their single-family properties as household pets, a comprehensive review of the animal ordinance is underway. A summary of the significant changes reflected in the proposed amendment can be found below:
1. Definition of “Household Pet” is established. The proposed language includes a list of common household pets that would be allowed; this list excludes farm animals.
2. A limit to the total number of dogs, cats, and ferrets allowed to be kept at a residence. Currently not more than 3 dogs and 3 cats are allowed. The proposed language allows for up to 3 but no more than 3 dogs, cats, and ferrets but in any case no more than a total of 6 by any combination of the three.
3. Prohibition of certain animal types from residential properties including farm animals, as well as animals considered wild and/or dangerous.
