Do you have icicles hanging from your roof? This might be a good sign that you have a significant amount of heat loss from your home. These conditions may have negative impacts to your home and heating bill.

If you have a large number of icicles hanging from your roof this winter it may signal that a significant amount of heat is escaping from your home through your roof. Not only will this raise your heating costs; if left unchecked, it could cause damage to your roof structure and lead to water intrusion down the road. If large amounts of snow are allowed to melt, refreeze and build up on your roof this will create an ice dam, which in spring may not allow for adequate drainage of water from your roof. This is when water may start to back up and flow into your home causing water damage.

If you have noted these conditions at your home here are a couple of recommendations for possible remedies. First, simply raking the snow from your roof should eliminate any potential for an ice dam from occurring. Snow rakes specifically for this purpose can be purchased at most home improvement stores. Second, you might consider adding insulation to your attic space. This may prevent significant heat loss from taking place at your home. Lastly, you may consider contacting a professional for additional solutions or advice. Remember, proper home maintenance is not only smart, but a great way to keep your neighborhood healthy and attractive.
